As OTC’s Director of Physical Sciences and Digital Innovations Licensing and Corporate Alliances, Dan is responsible for outreach, marketing and licensing for physical sciences and digital innovations, and use of translational funds for investment in nascent technologies within Pratt, Trinity, Duke Health and other Duke schools. He also works in concert with the Office for External Partnerships (OEP) to provide strategic support to the development of multi-year corporate alliances, business development partners, and negotiation of IP terms for significant corporate sponsored research agreements. Before Duke, Dan spent nearly twenty years at the MIT Technology Licensing Office, as a technology licensing officer, managing a large and sophisticated portfolio of technologies including: computer and information technology, patented algorithms, copyrighted software, digital imaging, video games, machine learning/AI, data, and cyber security technologies. Dan is a Certified Licensing ProfessionalTM. Dan has negotiated license agreements with many businesses, from startups to Fortune 500 companies, and is expert at counseling inventors and entrepreneurs on how to protect and leverage university-born innovations into commercialization opportunities. Dan is a teaching fellow who co-teaches an introductory course on intellectual property at Harvard University’s Summer School. He is frequently sought after to speak at professional conferences and industry symposia. Dan has long served as an active member to the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and has been chairperson to its software committee for many years. He has been awarded AUTM’s Volunteer Service Award twice in 2017 and 2021. Daniel is also on the advisory board at the FAME (the Fashion, Arts, Media and Entertainment) Law Center at Cardozo law school in New York, NY. He has degrees in physics and political science from the University of Rochester.
